Chengdu, China – History was made last week at the brand-new Panda Wakepark cable, purpose-built for The World Games. Selected based on their world rankings and victories in major competitions, the planet’s top wakeboarders gathered for a long-awaited showdown — and it was Germany’s Julia Rick who stole the spotlight on the Open women division .

The Return of Cable Wakeboarding to The World Games

It had been twenty years since cable wakeboarding last featured at The World Games, with its only appearance in Duisburg, Germany, back in 2005. Known as a multi-sport event for disciplines outside the Olympic and Paralympic programs, The World Games first took place in 1981 in the United States, offering athletes from non-Olympic sports a global stage.

In 2005, four waterski and wakeboard disciplines were on the schedule: Barefoot, Boat Wakeboard, Cable Wakeboard, and Overall Waterski. Back then, Denise De Haan (NED) claimed gold in the women’s cable event, with Kirsten-Brigitte Leifel (GER) and Pauline Dyrschka (GER) rounding out the podium.

Julia Rick Reclaims Her Throne

Fast forward to 2025, and the sport has evolved into a high-powered spectacle, with athletes pushing the limits of what’s possible on a cable. In the women’s division, all eyes were on Julia Rick — the multiple-time world champion and global icon of women’s wakeboarding.

After narrowly missing gold at the World Championships in Paris last September, Rick came to Chengdu with one mission: to win. She delivered under pressure, combining flawless execution with her trademark technical mastery to secure the top step of the podium.

“I’ve been dreaming about this moment since Paris,” said Rick after her victory. “To win gold here, at The World Games, with the world watching, is just incredible.”

Italian rising star Vanessa Titarelli claimed silver, proving once again she’s a serious contender for the sport’s future. Bronze went to the Netherlands’ Sanne Meijer, the reigning Cable World Champion, who also competed in the boat wakeboard event earlier in the week.

Massimiliano Piffaretti of Italy dominated the men’s division while Sanne Meijer of the Netherlands took the women’s title in the wakeboard competition at Legtaifiya Lagoon during the Anoc World Beach Games.

Italian Winner

Showing grace and poise, Piffaretti posted the day’s highest score of 86.22, netting 28.53 for execution, 29.06 for intensity and 28.64 for composition from the judging panel. Piffaretti — the reigning European men’s wakeboard champion and 2015 world champion — had an amazing start and went on to beat Cory Teunissen of Australia, who took silver with just 2 points behind Piffaret, while 21-year-old Guenther Oka of the US bagged the bronze with 82.67 points.

“I never really thought about gold medal until the result came out. I feel amazing right now. I’m over the moon and I’m stoked to be able to come here in Qatar and perform the run that I had planned since day one,” Piffaretti told Gulf Times after receiving the gold medal.
“I take advice from every single person that I really like. That’s the kind of person I’m. I do believe that I can always learn from other athletes as well,” Piffaretti added. Speaking after winning the silver medal, Cory Teunissen said, “I had a few wobbles, had a crash on a trick that I never really crash on, so definitely a few unexpected events went down but I ended up with the silver medal so can’t be super bummed with that.”

Meijer Magic

In the women’s final, two-time European champion Sanne Meijer outclassed the field, finishing with a whopping 83.88-points, netting 27.75 for execution, 28.17 for intensity and 27.86 for composition. Alice Virag of Italy placed second with 66.45 points while Jamie Lopina of the US had 64.11 points to claim bronze. “I can’t describe how excited I’m. Looking at yesterday I was kind of disappointed in my riding but now I’m incredibly happy,” Meijer told Gulf Times. Banking on the experience from Doha, Meijer hopes to take her winning form through to the World Championships next week in Cancun, Mexico.

“It’s pretty hectic but I’m excited now. I hope to win but it’s going to be hard, really hard. It’s a different federation to this so it will also be different scoring. It’s only the second time I will compete in these kind of Worlds so it will be kind of like a tryout, but I’ll try my best (in Mexico),” Meijer said. Speaking about Meijer’s performance, coach Peter Van Getel said, “As a coach, I’m proud that Meijer won the gold. Three weeks ago we had a very fruitful training in Portugal and that was the last training Meijer had before this contest. Last week was a complete rest for her. “The competition is so well-organised; people in Qatar are so friendly. We just love being here in this beautiful country.” Getel said.

Yesterday, the Paris Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (OCOG) announced that cable wakeboarding has failed to earn a place on the preliminary list of additional sports for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games .

Of the nineteen sports that made presentations to OCOG, those who have now made the short list include sports that will be part of the Tokyo Games in 2020. These include surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing. Break Dancing was also added to the list by OCOG.

A final decision on which sports will actually make it into the 2024 Paris Olympic Games will only be made by the IOC selection committee in December 2020.

So nothing is lost yet for the cable wakeboard which can still prove its worth for the Olympic Games in Paris 2024 !

“Our master plan to bring cable wakeboarding to participants of all ages and athletic abilities in urban settings is still on track,” said Patrice Martin, President of the French Waterski and Wakeboard Federation (FFSNW).   Regardless of our status in the Olympics at this time we are still going ahead with plans to build a new cable wakeboard park in Paris and have it operational by 2020. This new venue will play host to recreational riders and some major competitions in the future. “

2014 IWWF World Cable Wakeboard Champion Sanne Meijer from the Netherlands was disappointed to hear that her sport was not immediately proposed for inclusion in the 2024 Summer Olympic Games but says.  “ It takes lots of hard work to achieve any goal in life so we will just continue to make this sport bigger, better and more accessible to all and someday we will hopefully be part of the Olympic Games.“

Cable wakeboarding will be part of the South East Asian Games this November in the Philippines and also the Asian Beach Games in China next December.

The International Water Ski and Wakeboard Federation (IWWF) continues its efforts to integrate cable wakeboarding into the Summer Olympic Games.

Cable Wakeboarding is considered a competitor in surfing, skateboarding, karate, rock climbing, baseball/softball, petanque, squash and billiards for additional sports for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

IWWF President Jose Antonio Perez Priego, an IWWF World Cable Wakeboard Champion Sanne Meijer and the President of the French Waterski and Wakeboard Federation, head of the IWWF Olympic Task-Force, and former many time World Waterski Champion Patrice Martin are intensifying efforts to place wakeboard cable at the top of the list !

Paris2024-olympic-iwwf

“We believe cable wakeboarding is mature, ready, and uniquely qualified to be part of the Games”, said IWWF President Jose Antonio Perez Priego. “It could do for the Summer Olympics what snowboarding did for the Winter Olympics, “It’s inclusion would be a stepping stone for other IWWF disciplines into the Olympics. To succeed, all members of the IWWF and especially the cable wakeboard community must be fully invested in this special opportunity.“

Indeed, the Organising Committee for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games (OCOG) and the IOC are seeking sports with the aim of hosting extraordinary Games. These sports should be youthful, visually exciting, highly appealing for TV audiences, gender equal, environmentally friendly and can provide legacy facilities for athletes of all abilities and ages.

The final decision on the sports to be selected for the Paris Olympic Games in December 2020.

The French Water Ski and Wakeboard Federation (FFSNW) has already begun the construction of a cable wakeboard park at a perfect location near Paris that will be operational by 2020. In cooperation with IWWF.

“We have built a strategic development program within the French Federation so we will have cable wakeboarding in Paris soon,” said Patrice Martin. “The sport is growing like crazy. There are now 1,000 cable wakeboard parks around the world and projections show by 2024 that figure will grow to 1,500.”

To support the Olympic Quest, IWWF has created a working group that, in addition to those mentioned above, includes Gregory Saint-Genies, the Director of the FFSNW and a former winter Olympian, Walter Ditsch, Chairman of the Board of the IWWF Cable Wakeboard, Paul Fong, Executive Director of the IWWF and George Athans, former World Water Ski Champion who will be responsible for documents and video productions.
